EA Sports released a brand new blog entry and a video documenting the changes that they are implementing into NHL 20 this year. Some of the more interesting bits to us involve the specific shots you can take, like how they’ve made improvements to deke shots, which we’ve highlighted below. They’ve also worked out changeups and transitions to flow smoother and be more impactful to the game.

Every licensed player will be assigned their own shooting style to better match the real world look of their shot. Created players will also have that same option, giving you another level of customization to showcase your unique personality and style on the ice. Shooting styles have nuanced differences that take into account different windups, follow throughs, leg kicks, release points, and more to give each shooting style their own unique look.

While you may still fan on some shots in NHL 20, the update to the shooting mechanic may make this burden less frequent. Players will now adjust to a pass: if it is slightly off, a player will change his positioning to receive the puck more efficiently. In the case of a one-timer, the player may stop and reach back for a pass that was behind him or reach forward for a pass far in front of him. These scenarios will take some speed and accuracy off of the shot but reward accurate passes.

Changes have also been made to goalie AI. In NHL 19, goalies didn't always cover or protect rebounds when they probably should have, leading to cheap goals. But in NHL 20, goalies are smarter and more capable; they're now smarter about positioning and make better choices regarding controlled saves and redirects. In total, EA Sports added more than 450 new animations for goalies.

Along with the 18 Signature Shots to be added to NHL 20, a myriad of other animations will be included such as 45 new contextual shot animations so players take more realistic looking shots with reference to position and distance from the net and the position of the puck. Goalies have also received AI updates that makes them smarter and more capable, preventing cheap goals and allowing them to make better choices regarding saves and redirects. NHL 20 launches on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 13 with Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews gracing this year's cover.
